The November Sew-N-Sews meeting will feature Mary Atkinson, the costume coordinator and resident designer for Broadway Palm Theatre in Mesa. Mary has an extensive background in fashion design, performance costuming, contemporary quilts and wearable art. She owned and operated a dressmaking shop for eight years and taught numerous design and sewing classes before moving to Arizona.
Mary's design sense tends to be literal and authentic. Her design process is very organic where often a whole scene will grow from one great piece of fabric. She currently owns a hobby company called Uncommon Threads where she designs and constructs wearable art jackets, handbags and fashion accessories. "I love using recycled denim jeans and found objects in my design. There's nothing quite as iconic as a well-loved pair of blue jeans. Thrift stores are great fun! There's a lot of inspiration is speciality fabrics that are no longer produced."
